TBird’s Review:
I won’t mislead you by saying this is the darkest book I have ever read,
but it certainly isn’t a romantic story meant for the weak of heart. There
are some pretty dark and intense scenes in this book that will have you
sitting on the edge of your seat while reading. I felt the author did a
great job at keeping a balance in the details to provide a book for those
readers who are getting accustom to the dark genre but don’t have the
stomach to take the worst of the worst scenes available on the market
today.
Grace plays in the BDSM community but nothing feels real. She wants a life
as a slave, to be totally free of making decisions in her life. She wants
a Master who will take care of her and lead her in every aspect of life.
While her one friend is also in the community she doesn’t understand the
need Grace has for being a 24/7 slave and tries to set her up with Masters
in the club. Everything falls short for Grace except Lucas, a master she
has met online who lives on an island that was made for the exact lifestyle
she wants. The only problem is she will have to give up her citizenship
and everything thing she owns to go to the island and become the slave for
Master Lucas. After a year of online communication she decides she is
going to him, but little did she know her nightmare was just beginning.
Once in person Lucas was NOT the Master he portrayed himself to be in their
communications. He is ruthless and evil and his goal was to break Grace
within the first 24 hours. When he realized he couldn’t conform Grace to
his wishes he sold her off to Asher and I feel this is where the real story
in this plot begins.
Asher has his own demons that he is trying to conquer and his reasons for
buying Grace left me skeptical of him at first but once he had Grace in his
home he found his heart was beginning to melt for her and her broken soul.
To watch as he finds the balance of healing her heart and remaining a
strict Dom was fascinating for me. Just when you felt all was going to
work out for them, his past came back and tore what they had tried to build
apart, not knowing if it would ever be repaired.
There were some scenes in the book that had me squeamish and wanting to
turn my head but the detailing was never worse than where my imagination
took me on my own. I was not given an ARC for review; I bought this book
on my own because I had heard some of my friends talk about the uniqueness
of this story and how well it was written. I agree with their assessment
but will add I was left with some questions that were never answered. The
island was referred to many times regarding the laws and masters evilness
that consumed the community, yet we were limited mainly to Lucas and Asher
as examples. While reading I wanted more information and examples but once
I finished the book I could understand why the author directed the reader
down one path in the story and didn’t expand in great detail about the
environment. Finding the balance in the dark genre community is difficult,
you have some who want to be totally destroyed as they read, while others
just can’t handle that much raw reality in a book. I would say if you are
new to the mind twisting genre and want a book that will leave you thinking
and heart racing but not the nightmares and haunting images that will last
a while once you are done reading, this is your book. I will certainly be
looking for more work from this author. 4 stars!
