Renee’s 5 Star Reviews:

Five star review

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie’s Book Reports.

The Empathy Boxset includes the entire collection of Empathy Novels. Empathy, Desolate, Vacant, and Deadly.

I love dark and twisted books. I gobble them up as fast as I can actually. As I started this boxset I assumed it would be along the lines of the others dark themed books I’ve read. Boy, was I wrong, so very very wrong.

Book One:  Empathy

This is the first book in the series. This is where you think your mind is going to be blown. It will be, but you better just hold on.

Empathy is defined as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of others”. Can you be born without empathy or has something in your life caused you to harden yourself so hard you don’t feel empathy anymore. Meet Blake, a police office by day, killer for hire when he needs to be. He’s a computer wiz and can manipulate anything to fit the situations he finds himself in. He is cold, unfeeling, and down right mean all because of his childhood. He is also fiercely protective of his brother Ryan. Ryan has always been loved by Blake. He’d do anything for Ryan, the college student, closed off, antisocial, and takes no interest in much if anything except……. Melody is a college student Raised by wealthy loving parents,  but having a hard time making friends until she basically forces Ryan to talk to her one day. They fast become friends but Blake is very attracted to Melody. She’s the exact opposite of  both Ryan and Blake but for different reasons.

I loved this first book. It’s a page turner and a book that introduces you to the madness. It wastes no time getting started so be prepared to be sucked into this world that Ker Dukey has created.

Book Two: Desolate

Ryan. This book is about Ryan and it picks up eighteen years from the first book. Blake and Melody are of course in the book with the addition of their daughter Cereus. Boy oh boy you just think that Ryan was a very bad boy in Empathy. He is the master manipulator and is out playing with lives having the time of his life. He also had an intense interest in Cereus, the niece he was never ever suppose to know about. He sees himself in Cereus and they quickly form  a relationship.

I loved Desolate just as much as I did Empathy. The creepy factor was with me the whole time reading. It made me a nervous wreck at times and I found myself talking to the characters quiet often. You know you all do that too. I can’t possibly be the only one. Or, perhaps these characters started seeping into my system and I couldn’t get them out of my head. I’ll never tell.

Novella: Vacant

In Vacant we are with Cereus in college. She’s a very talented artist but is having a hard time fitting in and making friends. She mainly stays by herself and is terribly lonely without Ryan. (You have to read Desolate to see why)

I equally loved this novella. I wanted so desperately for things to be different for Cereus than they were. I found myself feeling so sorry for her. Then, I found myself to be a nervous wreck and a little shocked at what I was reading. It’s certainly not the road I thought I’d be traveling with her. It’s so worth the read though.

Novella: Deadly

Deadly is mainly about Ryan and Cereus. It includes her Mom and Dad, Blake and Melody too. I find it hard to say much about the plot of the book because it’s the finale to the series and it would stink for something to get ruined.

I devoured this book, and once again found me self a lot freaked out and at times sad at what I was reading. You’d think with characters as evil as these you’d not feel what your going to. You would think you would root for their demise but you won’t. It’s a fast paced novella that flashed back from present time to the month before what’s actually going on at the moment. Again, it’s impossible to put it down just like all the rest of the books in the series.

This is an amazing series. One I’m glad that I didn’t miss out on. If you like books dark and very very twisted that will blow your mind, then this is the boxset for you . It’s totally different from any other dark reads I’ve ever read, but I loved that about it. Ker Dukey is a master of her words and at the manipulation of them. She will blow your mind!!! My advice is grab this box set, sit back, open your mind, and enjoy the ride to the edge of sanity or the depths of insanity.  It all depends on the direction the characters and Ker Dukey take you.

Carla’s 5 Star Reviews:

5 stars for Empathy by Ker Dukey!

Holy cow!  If you are a fan of dark and twisted reads, you have found your next book!  This is the first book in the Empathy series, and it is beyond awesome!  I will issue a warning though-if you are not a fan of dark reads, steer clear of this one!

Melody is a happy go lucky college student.  She has lived a life of privilege with both of her parents showing her the love and respect that each child deserves.  She has no idea that when she befriends the sexy yet broody, Ryan, whom she shares a class with that a plan will be set in motion that will end up altering the course of her life.  While leaving class one day, she runs into what she describes as a “tank” of a man.  His name is Blake, and she soon discovers that he is the older brother of Ryan.

While Melody has known only love in her life, the brothers have only known darkness.  Because of this, they each claim to lack any kind of empathy towards others.  However, one brother is redeemable, while the other is the perfect description of a psychopath.  For fear of spoilers, I am not going to give any more details about the story line.  I will say that this is one book that will take you on a very twisted ride.  It is crazy, crazy, crazy!!

I am a big fan of dark reads, so this book was right up my alley.  I am so looking forward to reading the next book in this series!!  I can’t wait to climb back on the crazy express!  All aboard!!

5 stars for Desolate, the second book in the Empathy series, by Ker Dukey!!  This is not a stand alone.  You need to read the first book, Empathy, to understand both the characters and story line. Also, this is a very dark read, so if that bothers you, do not read this book.

Ryan has been living in a mental hospital for the past eighteen years.  Being the master manipulator that he is, he has convinced the doctors that they have cured him.  Of course, they believe him, so he is released back into society.  Ryan’s brother, Blake, has been living a happy life with his wife, Melody, and his daughter, Cereus.  That all changes when he learns of Ryan’s release.  Blake doesn’t want to worry Melody, so he keeps the news a secret.  He is determined to protect his family this time around, but he should know better.  With Ryan around, no one is safe.  From the first moment he learned of her existence, Ryan has been obsessed with Cereus.  From book one, we all know what happens to those Ryan has in his cross hairs.  Hang on tight, it is going to be another crazy ride!

I loved this book as much as the first.  The story line draws you in from the first word and leaves you waiting on the edge of your seat with anticipation.  Ker Dukey has made it to the list of my most favorite authors!  This book is awesome-buy it now!!

5 stars for Vacant by Ker Dukey!!  Warning-this is a very dark read.

Ker Dukey has done it again!  Vacant is the perfect ending for this amazing dark series.  In the opening of the story, Cereus has gone to college and is doing her best to live a normal life.  There is just one problem- her every thought is consumed with Ryan. As the story progresses, we witness Cereus  fall into depression and end up in the grips of insanity.  I freaking loved this book as well as this entire series!  There are so many twists and turns in this story, you will end with whip lash from it all!  I am convinced ( and you will be too) that Ker Dukey is an evil master mind! :).  I am so glad that I was given a chance to read and review all of these book!  If you haven’t read the books in this series, you should do it now!  I promise you will not be disappointed!

I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bed time stories with my sisters. I wanted to be an actress growing up so I could live many roles but I learned early on that my mind was too active… I would want to change the script.I would watch films and think of ways they could have improved the story if they took another direction so i thought it best that i tell my own.

My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. Not all love stories are made from light, some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling.

When I’m not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. I’m a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister.

You can find me on Facebook where I love interacting with my readers.
