I’m not sure what I was thinking that day.
It was a normal Thursday, nothing new or exciting had occurred in the morning.
I’d risen from bed, taken a shower and brushed my teeth. I’d then jumped on the 8:05 bus that ran a short distance between my house and the county library where I worked.
The ride took its usual 15 minutes before it left me standing fresh faced in front of a building of gothic construction that was my favorite place in the world.
After straightening my knee length skirt, I pushed open the door that led into the interior of the library.

Now, 11 years later and I was lying here in a candlelit room, my chest to the ground, my arms spread out at my sides as if I were flying. I couldn’t see because a blindfold covered my eyes and my forehead was pressed so firmly to the floor that no person would question my loyalty. Only I knew that I wasn’t the person I portrayed myself to be.
Hands smooth over my ankles and calves. They reach my knees, pushing the back of my dress up along the sensitive skin on the backs of my thighs. I pull in a deep breath of the frigid air in the room, my body prickling from the chill, the anticipation and the fear that mixes within my veins. Small flames illuminate the large space. Large black candles that somehow steal the very light they give off. Wind whips through the room despite the doors being closed and the stained glass windows not having been designed to be opened.
A crowd has gathered, but they sit silently watching as I become lost to the moment – as I lie still and accepting of the acts soon to be committed against me.
I feel a draft over my bottom and then a thumb trailing along the split in the cheeks. My body shudders at the touch and my teeth clench, causing a sliver of pain to run along my nerves from how tight I hold my jaw.
Knees fall on the floor on either side of me and once again, his hands touch me. His fingers grip around my hips, lifting just that part of me from the floor while I fight to remain in the position I’d held for over an hour.
His voice, deep and calm – hypnotic in the soft accents to his words – suddenly fills the space. It’s loud, but still reminiscent of a whisper when he instructs the gathering to begin their part.
Words roll over their lips, notes softly hummed and rattling in their chests. They watch – and they participate – and they stand behind us with blind eyes opened wide.
He lowers himself over me, his lips touching the rim of my ear when he speaks to me alone, when he walks me through what he will do to make me his wife.
I feel his knees move between mine and I keep my toes pointed out as my legs are spread with his. My forehead presses closer to the floor and my eyes close tightly against the tears that threaten to fall.
I don’t want to do this. I don’t feel honored as I’m supposed to. I’m not worthy of a man like him. I’ll fail – I won’t believe in him – and I’ll be killed as a result of it.
Hands sliding along the my thighs once more, he moves them up over my hips, fingers entwining themselves in the fabric of my panties, slowly pulling – revealing me to his amber eyes.
Closing my eyes tighter, I refuse the urge to push away, to move, to escape.
However, within seconds, the choice would no longer be mine.
The fighting started slowly – growing louder – until one voice rose above the others.
There was a struggle above me and I was suddenly pulled from the floor. My feet barely held my weight when the blindfold was ripped from my head.
Opening my eyes, I saw my brother’s face, his mouth open, the anxiety, anger and fear that rolled behind his eyes. When time finally caught up, I heard one word that woke me from my stupor, a word that made me realize quickly what I had to do.
