Renee’s 5 Star Review:
I received a copy of this book from the Summer Reading Challenge for Stephanie’s Book Reports for an honest review.
The Balance Project: A Novel is a fast paced page turner with twists and turns that will leave you unable to put the book down.
Can a woman really have and do it all? This is a age old question that is the focus of The Balance Project: A Novel. Susie Orman Schall actually conducted interviews of over eighty women that she called “The Balance Project” You can find the interviews that she did on her website at www.susieschnall.com She has even included the interview questions for readers to fill out or do online in the back of the book.
This book is told from the view point of Lucy Cooper, assistant to Katherine Whitney who seems to have and do it all. A high powered job at a multibillion-dollar company, a successful husband, two adorable daughters, and has written a book on work-life balance. She is the envy and media darling to working women everywhere. What nobody but Lucy knows though is Katherine’s life is falling apart and Lucy is the one holding it all together while neglecting things in her own life. Katherine then in turn is not nice to Lucy and even sabotages something that was Lucy’s dream. Lucy even loses her boyfriend Nick in the process of keeping Katherine’s life together.
I really really liked this novel a lot. I fell in love with Lucy from the very beginning of the book. My heart really went out to her many times. I wanted to yell at her even shake her a little bit but always was rooting for her. Without Lucy, Katherine’s life would be on hot mess and the ability to do it all wouldn’t happen. Katherine though is no a bad character and has redeeming qualities so I don’t want to paint her as a villain in the story. It’s a book that will keep you reading well past your bed time, laughing at times, but really thinking about the possibilities of having and doing it all. Perhaps even changing the idea of having and doing it all really means to you.
